International and NGO jobs

How the UN system, NGOs and other international employers post their jobs and hire, and how to apply from another country.

The posts cover the right to work, visas, remote roles that are open only in some countries, and the interviews these employers run.

NGO jobs: where to look and how to apply

NGO jobs are posted on each organisation's own careers page, on sector job boards and, for the UN system, on agency portals. Read the contract type and funding line first, then follow the listing's own application route. Zorlya reads a United Kingdom charity board and a UN vacancies feed, lists employers in a directory, and has no NGO filter.

UN jobs: how hiring works and where roles post

UN jobs are posted by each organisation in the UN system on its own careers portal, and you apply through that portal. Aggregator sites copy the ads, so confirm every closing date on the official page. Zorlya reads a feed of UN agency vacancies kept by a third-party site, which links each ad to the agency's page, and has no UN-specific filter.

Applying from abroad

Applying for a job outside your country

Before you apply abroad, find out four things from the posting or the employer: whether you may legally work there, whether the employer helps with that, which documents the country expects, and what the pay is worth after local tax and costs. Rules differ by country and by case, so confirm each one with an official source.

Visa sponsorship jobs: how to find and check them

Visa sponsorship jobs are roles where the employer says it will support your application for permission to work in the country. Find them on employer careers pages and by asking in writing, then confirm any claim with the government's immigration site. Zorlya has no visa or sponsorship filter, and this is not legal advice.

NGO and nonprofit applications: how they differ

Nonprofit and NGO applications usually ask for more writing, more evidence of why you want this cause, and more patience with the process. Many roles are funded for a fixed term, pay bands are often set in advance, and references and checks are common. Read the posting for those signals, and answer each question in the form instead of sending a general letter.

Applying in several countries at once

Add four country facts to your tracker (right to work, language, document style and time zone), keep one master resume with a small number of country versions, and put every deadline in one calendar with its time zone. The extra columns stop a multi-country search from turning into confusion.

Interviews and tests

Interviewing with an international organisation

Read the vacancy notice for the stages it lists, prepare six real examples that show the competencies it names, and learn the organisation's mandate from its own publications. Expect a panel, possibly a written test, and a slow process. Check each detail with the organisation itself.

Remote jobs and your country: what remote means

A remote job is usually open only to countries where the employer can legally pay and employ you, so check the location line before you apply. Read it for a country, a region or a time zone, learn what each phrase usually means, and ask directly whether the employer can hire in your country. If it cannot, a polite question is still worth sending.

Is this remote job really remote? A checklist

A posting that says remote can still require a country, a time zone, a legal right to work, or days in an office. Check five things before you apply: where you may live, which hours overlap, who pays you, what equipment and travel are expected, and what the contract says about moving. Most answers are in the text, and the rest take one email.

ASEAN Secretariat jobs and other regional bodies

We could not read the ASEAN Secretariat's website, which refused our reader, so this post covers the regional bodies in Asia and the Pacific we could read. APEC hires from its member economies by email, the Pacific Community asks for a resume, a cover letter and answers to screening questions, and the ASEAN Foundation runs short application windows and unpaid internships.

Agricultural research jobs: CGIAR and others

CGIAR jobs are posted by each research centre on its own job board, and the CGIAR careers page links all of them. Scientist posts ask for a PhD and years of research, many posts are recruited locally, and PhD, MSc and fellowship places sit on the same boards as staff jobs.

Foundation jobs: what foundations hire for

Foundation jobs are posted on each foundation's own careers page and filled through an online application system, one opening at a time. The large foundations covered here hire grantmaking, strategy and operations staff, many from outside philanthropy. Check the location and your right to work first, because the Gates Foundation sponsors visas only for some leadership roles.
