Add a job from any site and what stays private

By Zorlya8 min read

In short

  • Add a job from any site to your Zorlya account with its link, its pasted text, or both, and it stays private to you.
  • From a link alone Zorlya keeps only the title, employer, place and date, so paste the text to get a score and a cover letter.
  • Added jobs count toward your plan's saved jobs, with at most 200 private jobs per account.

You can add a job from any site to your Zorlya account, because Zorlya reads a long list of public job boards and employer systems and no list covers everything. A small charity, a university department or a city council often posts a role on its own page and nowhere else. The Add a job button is for those roles. You give Zorlya the link, the text of the posting, or both, and the job joins your own list.

The short version

Click Add a job in the top bar of the job seeker app (it is an icon on a phone). Paste a link, paste the text, or do both. The job is saved to your account and nobody else can see it. It then works like any saved job: you can tailor a resume to it, write a cover letter and track the application.

How to add one

  1. Open the Add a job dialog from the top bar.
  2. Paste the link to the posting. A link must start with https.
  3. Paste the whole text of the posting too, from 30 up to 20,000 characters. This step matters more than it looks, and the next section says why.
  4. Type a job title and employer if you want to. Both are optional.
  5. Press Add job. You land on the job’s page.

You must give at least a link or some text. If you give a link and no title or employer, Zorlya opens the page to find them. If that fails and you gave no text, nothing is saved and the dialog asks you to paste the posting and add the job again.

Why you should paste the text

When Zorlya opens a link, it reads only four things: the title, the employer, the place and the date. It does not keep the description of the job. A site’s terms may not allow anyone to copy its posting, and Zorlya has no way to know, so it keeps none of it.

The description is what a score and a cover letter are built from. A job with no description has no score. So the link tells Zorlya where the job is, and the text you paste is what lets Zorlya work with it. If you add a link first and paste the text later, add the same link again with the text. The job is not duplicated: the same link returns the same job, and the text is attached to it.

If the link matches a job Zorlya already holds, Zorlya saves that job for you instead of making a private copy.

Which roles is it for?

Table
Where you found the role What to add
A council, ministry or university vacancies page The link and the full text
A vacancy notice published as a PDF The link to the PDF and the text copied out of it
A role a contact sent you by email or message The text, and the link if there is one
A post on a social network or a community board The text, and the link if the post is public
A company careers page on a hiring system Zorlya does not read The link and the full text

In every case, the text is what makes the job useful in Zorlya. The link is where you go back to apply.

A worked example

Illustrative: the council and the role are invented. A city council posts a “Community Programmes Officer” vacancy as a PDF on its website.

  1. Open the PDF, select all the text and copy it. If you cannot select it, the PDF is a scan, and you will need to type the key parts: the title, the duties and the requirements.
  2. In Zorlya, open Add a job and paste the PDF’s address as the link.
  3. Paste the copied text below it.
  4. Type “Community Programmes Officer” as the title and the council’s name as the employer, so Zorlya does not need to open the link at all.
  5. Press Add job.

The job page now has a description, so it gets a score, and you can tailor your resume and draft a cover letter from it. Add the closing date to your tracker by hand, from the notice.

What stays private

  • Only you see it. A job you add does not appear in anyone else’s feed or search, in counts or on any public page. No company is shown it.
  • It is not mixed into the shared index. The index holds jobs Zorlya reads from public sources. Yours sits beside it, in your account only.
  • It goes with your account. Delete the job, or delete your account, and the job is removed. One exception: if you have a tracked application, a cover letter or an outreach draft on that job, Zorlya keeps the job until you delete those too, because removing the job would take them with it. A job kept this way is still hidden from the shortlist and still visible only to you.
  • Plain text only. Title, employer and place cannot contain angle brackets. Tags are removed from pasted text.

The privacy policy has a section on this, under Jobs you add yourself. Read that for the legal wording. This post is the plain version.

When Zorlya opens your link, the request comes from Zorlya’s servers, not from your browser. Before it reads anything, Zorlya checks the site’s robots.txt file and follows it. It asks for https pages only, follows a few redirects at most, and stops after a short time limit. If a page cannot be read, it says so and asks for text.

Zorlya writes a short log line when it does this, with the host and the result. The path and the query part of your link are not logged.

If you give a link without a title or employer, Zorlya tries to read the page, and it may fail. The usual reasons are these:

  • The site’s robots.txt does not allow automated reading, and Zorlya follows it.
  • The page is not on https, or redirects to an address that is not.
  • The page is slow or very large. Zorlya waits about 10 seconds in all and reads at most about 400 KB.
  • The page builds its content with scripts, so the title and employer are not in what the server sends.

In each case the fix is the same: paste the text, type the title and employer, and add the job again.

Limits

  • Your plan’s saved jobs limit applies. The Free plan holds 25 saved jobs, and the higher job seeker plans have no cap. Adding a new job past your limit is refused before any page is opened. Jobs you saved earlier stay saved. See pricing for the plans.
  • 200 private jobs per account. That is a hard ceiling, including on plans with no saved jobs cap.
  • Adding often is slowed down. There is a rate limit on this action for each account.

When to use it, and when not

Use it for a role on a site Zorlya does not list, or for a job someone sent you by email or message. Check where the jobs come from first if you are not sure whether a source is already covered: if the job is on a source Zorlya reads, search for it and save it the usual way, and you will get its full record.

Do not paste anything you are not free to keep. A posting you were sent in confidence should stay out. Because the job is private to you, Zorlya does not share it, but you are the one who chooses what goes in.

Questions people ask

Can other people see a job I add?

No. It is not in anyone else’s feed, search or counts, and no company is shown it.

Why does my added job have no score?

Because it has no description. Paste the text of the posting and add the same link again, and the text is attached to the job.

Does an added job count toward my saved jobs?

Yes. On the Free plan the limit is 25 saved jobs, and Plus and Pro have no cap. Every account can hold at most 200 jobs it added itself.

Can I add a job that Zorlya already lists?

You can paste its link, and Zorlya saves the listed job for you instead of making a private copy.

What we know and what we do not

We know how the feature behaves from its code and documentation. Zorlya does not know whether a site you add a job from allows its postings to be copied, which is why it keeps only the title, employer, place and date from a link and leaves the description to you. It also cannot tell whether a role you added is still open: check the page you added it from.
