# Install Zorlya as an app on your phone or computer

> Zorlya installs from the browser, with no app store. On Android and desktop Chrome use the install offer, on an iPhone use Share, then Add to Home Screen. Offline the app opens and says it is offline, but your jobs and applications still need a connection.

Zorlya is a web app that can be installed. Once installed it gets its own icon, opens in its own window without browser tabs and address bar, and starts from the home screen or the dock like any other app. There is no app store listing and nothing extra to download beyond the site itself.

This post covers how to install it on each kind of device, what still works with no connection, what the app never keeps on your device, and how updates reach you.

## Which parts of Zorlya can be installed

The job seeker app, the hiring app, Zorlya Mail and the admin console are all set up the same way. The public site at zorlya.com can be installed too. Each one installs separately and gets its own icon, so you can keep the seeker app on your phone and nothing else.

The job seeker app installs under the name "Zorlya" and offers three shortcuts when you press and hold its icon on a device that supports them: Jobs, Applications and Saved jobs. Zorlya Mail installs as "Zorlya Mail" with shortcuts to Inbox and Search.

On a phone, the job seeker app also offers to install itself. A sheet slides up a few seconds after the app opens, once, and stays quiet for 30 days after you press Not now. It does not appear in an app that is already installed.

## Install on Android

1. Open the app in Chrome.
2. Open Settings, then the About tab, and press "Install the app". If your browser offers installation, the card is there. If you do not see it, open the Chrome menu and choose Install app or Add to Home screen.
3. Confirm. The icon appears on your home screen and in the app drawer.

## Install on an iPhone or iPad

Apple does not let a web page trigger the install, so the steps are manual and they only work in Safari.

1. Open the app in Safari.
2. Tap the Share button.
3. Tap Add to Home Screen, then Add.

Safari is the sure route. Apple lets other browsers on iOS offer Add to Home Screen from the Share menu since iOS 16.4, but only if the browser's maker has built it in ([WebKit, "Web Push for Web Apps on iOS and iPadOS"](https://webkit.org/blog/13878/web-push-for-web-apps-on-ios-and-ipados/)). Zorlya cannot tell whether yours has, so if you do not see the option in Chrome, Firefox or Edge on your iPhone, open the same address in Safari. On an iPhone, the "Install the app" card under Settings, then About, shows the Safari steps instead of an install button.

## Install in Chrome or Edge on a computer

1. Open the app and sign in.
2. Use the install icon at the right end of the address bar, or open the account menu and choose "Install the app". The row only appears when your browser says the app can be installed.
3. Confirm. The app opens in its own window and is added to your applications or Start menu.

Safari on a Mac, from macOS Sonoma, can add a site to the Dock from the File menu: choose Add to Dock. Apple describes it as copying the site's cookies into the new web app so that you stay signed in, and sharing no other website data with it ([WebKit, "WebKit Features in Safari 17.0"](https://webkit.org/blog/14445/webkit-features-in-safari-17-0/)). Firefox on a computer does not install web apps.

## What works with no connection

The app's own files, meaning its scripts, styles, icons and logo, are saved on your device the first time you visit. Open the app with no network and it starts, shows a banner that you are offline, and waits.

That is the whole of it. The app does not keep your jobs, your matches, your applications or your cover letters on the device, so a list that needs the network shows an error instead of an old copy. We chose this on purpose. An old copy of a match score or an application stage looks current and is not, and a job search is the kind of work where acting on stale data costs you something.

The public site works a little differently. The home page and the pricing page open offline from the saved copy. Any other page shows a plain offline page. Blog posts are not saved.

## What is never stored on your device

The worker that does the saving ignores several kinds of request. It never stores anything from the API, and so no response about you. It never stores a request that sends data, a request that carries a sign-in credential, a file download, or anything that comes from another site, such as a Gravatar picture. It also refuses to store any response the server marks as private.

For Zorlya Mail that means message bodies and attachments are never cached. They load from the server each time you open them.

When you sign out, the app deletes every cache it made and then saves the app's own files again, so the next person on a shared computer gets a working app and none of your session.

## How updates reach you

The app checks for a new version every hour and each time you come back to the tab. When one is ready, it downloads in the background and a notice says "A new version is ready", with two buttons: Reload and Later.

It never reloads by itself. If you are halfway through a cover letter or an email reply, you finish it, and then you press Reload. Press Later and the notice comes back the next time a check runs.

## What is not there yet

There are no push notifications. Notifications on a phone, such as a new match or a reply in your inbox, are not built and we have no date for them. When we do build them, the plan is that a notification would show the sender and subject of an email and never its text, because a notification can be read on a locked screen.

On iPhone, Safari deletes a website's script-writable storage after seven days of Safari use without a visit to that site. A web app added to the home screen has its own counter of days of use, and WebKit says it does not expect an installed app's data to be deleted ([WebKit, "Full Third-Party Cookie Blocking and More"](https://webkit.org/blog/10218/full-third-party-cookie-blocking-and-more/)). That is one more reason to install on an iPhone. Either way your account data is on the server and is not lost.

If the app ever behaves strangely after an update, close it and open it again. If that does not help, use the contact page and tell us the device and the browser. We can switch the offline worker off for everyone with a single change to the next release.

## Questions people ask

### Do I need to install Zorlya to use it?

No. Everything works in a browser tab. Installing gives you an icon, a window without browser tabs, and the shortcuts, and nothing more.

### Does installing use a lot of space?

The saved files are the app's scripts, styles, icons and logo, not your data. How much room that takes depends on the device and the browser, and we do not publish a figure. You can remove the app like any other and the account stays on the server.

### Can I read my saved jobs on a plane?

No. The app opens offline and says so, but a list of jobs, matches or applications needs a connection. We keep no copy on the device on purpose, so the list never shows a score or a stage that has changed since.

### I installed it and the install button has gone. Is that a fault?

No. The offer and the row in the account menu appear only while the browser says the app can be installed, and never in an app that is already installed.

## What we know and what we do not

The steps, the shortcuts, the 30 day quiet period after Not now, the hourly update check and the list of what is never cached come from the app's code and its tests. The Apple behaviour comes from WebKit's own posts, linked above, and Apple can change it in a later iOS release. We do not know how your particular browser words its install button, and browsers rename it from time to time, so look for "Install" or "Add to Home Screen". Push notifications are not built.
